8.6	Configuring backend database

Use this section to configure the Microsoft SQL Server database. This database will be used by GFI EndPointSecurity to keep an audit trail of all events generated by GFI EndPointSecurity agents deployed on network computers.

8.6.1

Creating a new database

To configure the database backend for the first time, click on the Configure Backend Database link provided in the Quick Start Dialog.

This will launch the ‘Change database’ dialog. To configure the Microsoft SQL Server and database backend details:

1. Specify the name/IP of your Microsoft SQL Server.

2. Specify a name for your database backend (e.g. EndPointSecurityDB).

3. Select the authentication method to be used when connecting to the database backend. If Microsoft SQL Server authentication is selected, specify the login username and password.

4. Click OK to finalize your settings.

Changing database backend

To change database backend settings:

1. Click on the Configuration tab.

2. Click Options.

3. From the left pane, select Database Backend.

4. From the right pane, click Change database backend.

5. Make the required changes and click OK to finalize your settings.

8.6.3

Database Maintenance

Periodical database maintenance is essential in order to prevent your database backend from growing too much. GFI EndPointSecurity allows you to configure parameters that automatically maintain your database backend.

Database maintenance parameters include:

•	The frequency in hours/days at which events will be backed up.

•	The frequency in hours/days at which events will be deleted from the database backend.

Event deletion and event backup frequency are specified through a common entry field and drop-down list provided in the dialog.

NOTE: Events are automatically deleted from the database backend every time a backup is performed.

NOTE: Deleted records can NOT be recovered

To configure database maintenance:

1. Click on the Configuration tab.

2. Click Options.

3. From the left pane, select Database Backend.

4. From the right pane, click Database maintenance.

5. Configure the required maintenance and click OK to finalize your settings.
