The FAXmaker system
The FAXmaker system consists of:
- A Fax server running as a service. This program handles all FAX communications & runs on the Fax or file server computer.
- An MTA (Message Transfer Agent). This program handles the communication between the Fax server & the client software. The program runs on the same machine as the Fax server. The MTA also interfaces with your mail server to be able to act as an Email to Fax gateway and Fax to Email gateway. (This requires a compatible mail server. More information about this can be found further on in this chapter.)
- Client software. This software allows the user to send and receive faxes. The software is installed on the actual client machine.
The FAXmaker server must be installed on Windows NT/2000. If you are running a Windows NT/2000 file server, you can install FAXmaker on the file server itself. This system is depicted in the following figure:

The Fax mailboxes are stored on the XP/2000 workstation or server. This installation is very efficient, and does not require a dedicated workstation, whilst allowing you to expand to 32 fax lines per fax server.
If you are running a Linux or Novell file server, you must install FAXmaker on a Windows XP/2000 machine, and configure the mailboxes to be on the Linux or Novell file server. This system is depicted in the following figure:

The databases are stored on the NetWare server and the clients access the FAXmaker databases and fax files via the Novell File server. In this network a separate workstation is required to run the fax server. Depending on the volume of faxes sent, the computer hardware and the operating system, the administrator must decide whether the workstation should be dedicated. The workstation can also be a Windows XP/2000 workstation acting as an application server for FAXmaker and other programs.
