The FAXmaker Email to Fax gateway

FAXmaker for Networks/SMTP includes an Email to Fax and Fax to Email gateway that allows faxes to be sent and received from popular email clients such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express and Lotus Notes.

FAXmaker is designed to integrate seamlessly with most mail servers, including Lotus Notes, Novell GroupWise and many SMTP/POP3 servers such as VPOP3.

Note: If you are using Microsoft Exchange, you should not use FAXmaker for Networks/SMTP, but our special version for Exchange server, FAXmaker for Exchange.

How the Email to Fax gateway works

The email clients send and receive mail via the mail server as usual. However, if a user addresses an email to a number or using the @FAX domain, the fax is routed by the mail server to the fax mailbox. The "fax mailbox", is a standard mailbox/POP account dedicated to the fax server. FAXmaker will check this mailbox for outbound faxes. When it finds a fax in the mailbox, it will send it out and report the transmission to the user. To do this it uses SMTP to communicate with the mail server. Received faxes are distributed in the same manner.

Requirements for the Email to Fax gateway

To use the FAXmaker Email to Fax gateway, apart from the `normal' FAXmaker requirements, you need one of the following:

  • Lotus Notes 4.5, 4.6, 5.0 or 6.0
  • Novell GroupWise
  • A standard SMTP/POP3 server such as VPOP3.
  • UNIX mail servers such as Sendmail are also supported.
