Database maintenance options

The GFI LANguard S.E.L.M. Archiver agent stores all event records in a database. You need to periodically delete or backup older events in this database. Failure to do this, will decrease system performance, especially that of the event viewer and reporter.

Database maintenance options

To specify when to delete or backup events:

1. In GFI LANguard S.E.L.M. configuration, go to the database maintenance node. Right click and select properties.

2. Select what action you want GFI LANguard S.E.L.M. to take:

  1. Not delete any events. You will delete events manually from the GFI LANguard S.E.L.M. event viewer.
  2. Delete events which are older than a specified period, e.g. "Delete events which are older than a week".
  3. Back up events older than a specified period to a separate database. This database is setup by default during the installation.

Switching between the main database and the backup database

NOTE : You will still be able to view and analyze the events in the GFI LANguard S.E.L.M. Event Viewer and generate reports based on the information contained in the backup database. Both the GFI LANguard S.E.L.M. Event Viewer and Reporter support switching between the main database and the backup database. This is achieved by right clicking on the root node of the GFI LANguard S.E.L.M. Event Viewer/Reporter MMC snap-in and select between the main database and the backup database.

You can also configure that LANguard S.E.L.M. should delete events from the backup database which are older than a particular period. We recommend moving events from the main database which are older than 30 days to the backup database, and to delete events which are older than 60 days from the backup database.

Compacting the database (Access only)

Compacting the Access database

After running LANguard S.E.L.M. for some time the database will grow to an unmanageable size, for example 1-2 gigabytes. Microsoft Access databases that grow that large will be vulnerable to corruption and fragmentation. This will negatively affect the performance and reliability of LANguard S.E.L.M.

You must periodically clear unused events & compact the database. This will ensure that best performance from the Access database, as well as control disk space usage.

You can also schedule the database compaction. GFI recommends you compact your database backends once every 14 days.

Change database backend.

Changing the database backend

This dialog allows you to change the database type (SQL or Access) or database file. This enables you to log events to a different file or a different database type.

To change to a different Access database file, simply select a new location where LANguard S.E.L.M should store the database.

To change to SQL Server, specify the SQL Server NETBIOS name together with an SQL account with administrator rights on the database.

You can also use this function in case you have changed the SQL Server administrator password and want LANguard S.E.L.M. to use the new password.
