Creating an attachment checking rule
An attachment checking rule allows you to block attachments with certain extensions or attachments of a certain size. The attachment checking rule differs from the content checking rule in that it only checks attachments for their extension or size. The content checking rule checks attachments also, but only for words contained in them.
To create an attachment checking rule:
1. Highlight the Attachment checking node in the Mail essentials configuration. Right click and select New> Attachment checking rule.
2. A new rule will be created in the right pane. Double-click on this rule. A tabbed dialog will appear.

3. You can now specify whether to apply this rule to inbound mails, outbound mails or both.
4. Specify which attachments to block. You can specify a list of attachments to block, or you can specify a list of attachments which are allowed through, such as doc or txt. Besides extensions, you can also specify to block mails with attachments larger than a certain size.

5. After you have specified what the attachment rule should check for, you can now specify what should be done if Mail essentials finds a mail with those words in the body.
You can choose from the following options:
Quarantine: This will quarantine the mail for review by an administrator. For more information on quarantining, see the paragraph in this chapter on Quarantining.
Delete attachment only: This action will delete the attachment of the mail and then send the mail as usual.
Delete the mail: This option will delete the entire mail.
Move to directory: This option will move the mail to a separate directory.
Notification: In addition you can choose to notify the sender, the recipient or both.
6. After you have configured what to check for and what to do, you can specify for which users Mail essentials will apply this rule. By default, Mail essentials will apply the rule to all email. However, you can choose to apply the rule to only a few users. This can be done from the users tab.

To add users, select add. This will bring up a users dialog. If you have Exchange server 2000 or Exchange server 5.5, Mail essentials will automatically list all your Exchange accounts. You can then select to which users to apply the rule. Alternatively you can select the users to which the rule should not apply!
Note: If you have Lotus Notes or an SMTP server, you must manually enter the user name and email address.
When you are ready specifying to which users the rule will apply, click OK to save the rule.
