Step 3: If installing on mail server machine – change mail server port.

If you have installed Mail essentials 5 on the same machine as your mail server, you must change the port on which your mail server receives on. By default, your mail server will be on port 25, the port on which Mail essentials must receive email. (Mail essentials can not be moved to another port, since otherwise it wont receive the email coming in via the internet and therefore it wont be able to analyze it). To change the SMTP port on your mail server:

If you are using Exchange server:

  1. On the Exchange server machine, open the file"../system32/drivers/etc/services", located in your Windows NT directory, with notepad.
  2. Change the following line "smtp 25/tcp mail" to "smtp 26/tcp mail". This means you are changing the SMTP port of Exchange from 25 to 26.
  3. Go to the Mail settings section in the Mail essentials general tab in the Mail essentials configuration program and in the edit box Mail server, enter the IP or host address of the Exchange server machine, followed by the port number (26 in our example) (for example: "100.130.130.129:26" or "localhost:26").
  4. Re-start the machine. You have now configured Mail essentials to receive mail on SMTP port 25 & then to reroute it to your Exchange server on port 26.

Note: If you de-install Mail essentials you must change the Exchange server port back to 25.
