Triggering the virus update manually

You can instruct Mail essentials to update the virus definition files manually. This might be useful to troubleshoot auto updates or in case you have a dial up connection. To update the virus files manually:

1. Go to the command prompt

2. Change to the Mail essentials directory

3. Type 'rundll32 dnvc.dll,dnvc_test ftp.gfi.com' and press enter. If you are located in the EU, it might be better to use the EU mirror server: ftp.gfifax.de.

Note: If a dialog window with message 'Error loading dnvc.dll' is shown, then you do not have Internet Explorer 3.0 or higher installed.

The virus definition files Nvcbin.def and Nvcmacro.def will now be updated. You can check the file date of these files in the Mail essentials/nse directory to check that the files have been updated.

If the download of the virus update files fails, a file called ltautodnvc.txt and optionally ltvircheck.txt will be created in the Mail essentials directory. If this happens, please send these files to support@gfi.com.
