Error: 'Unable to relay for IMCEAFAX' when sending a fax

Answer

PROBLEM

When sending a fax addressed to [FAX:<faxnumber>], you get an undeliverable message with the following error:
 
You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For assistance, contact your system administrator. 
mail.domain.com #5.7.1 smtp;550 5.7.1 
Unable to relay for IMCEAFAX-<faxnumber>@<domain.local>.
 
Sending a fax by addressing it to <faxnumber>@<domain.com> works correctly and the fax is sent successfully.

ENVIRONMENT

  • GFI FaxMaker
  • All Supported Environments 

SOLUTION

  1. Ensure the domain specified in the NDR is configured as an alias from Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
    • Note: The domain is specified in the line which says "Unable to relay for IMCEAFAX-<faxnumber>@<domain.local>."
    1. On the GFI FaxMaker server machine, open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager
    2. Expand Default SMTP Virtual Server 
    3. Right click Domains > New > Domain > Alias 
    4. Enter your domain name and click Finish
    5. Restart the IIS admin service on the GFI FaxMaker server 
  2. Ensure that SMTP is not restricted from accepting messages from your mail server or the GFI FaxMaker Clients
    1. On the GFI FaxMaker server machine, open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager
    2. Navigate to Default SMTP Virtual Server
    3. Right click Default SMTP Virtual Server > Properties > Access > Relay Restrictions
    4. In the list of '... computers which may relay...' confirm that the IP address of your mail server is included
    5. If you are using the GFI FaxMaker Client, confirm that the list of '... computers which may relay...' includes all the Client IP addresses

CAUSE

The domain specified is not configured as an alias in Internet Information Services (IIS) or IIS is restricted from allowing messages from the mail server or Clients.
