Opening the web interface using the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) requires username and password to be entered

Answer

PROBLEM

When opening the web interface using the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN), the Microsoft Internet Explorer (or other browsers) request the user name and password to be entered manually although the Windows Authentication has been enabled.
  • URL with FQDN: http://server123.domain.com/Archiver/

In comparison, when opening the web interface using the server's hostname the user is logged in automatically via Windows Authentication without being asked for username and password.
  • URL with hostname: http://server123/Archiver/

ENVIRONMENT

  • GFI Archiver
  • GFI LanGuard
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome

SOLUTION

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer
    1. Open the Internet Options from the Control Panel
    2. Select he Security tab
    3. Select Local intranet
    4. Click on Sites
    5. Click on Advanced
    6. Add the FQDN to the list: http://server123.domain.com
    7. Save the changes
  • Mozilla Firefox
    1. Open the browser
    2. Enter the following into the field where you normally enter a website URL: about:config
    3. Enter the following into the Search field: network.automatic-ntlm-auth.trusted-uris
    4. Double-click on the setting with the same name which appears in the list below
    5. Add the FQDN: http://server123.domain.com
    6. Save the changes

CAUSE

The browser is not configured to use Windows Authentication when connecting to the FQDN.
