SummaryWhen running a PDF report for virtual circuits that have no policies defined them, no matter the report range, are showing blank.
OverviewThe reporting feature in the Exinda is a powerful tool that can take the data and display it in a way similar to the Web UI's Monitoring, while allowing for scheduling and emailing automatically. One part of the PDF reporting is the ability to report on Virtual Circuits and their utilization of the bandwidth they are given, and how the bandwidth is split amongst the virtual circuit's policies. In cases where there are no explicit policies defined in a virtual circuit (for example, cases where the virtual circuit is just defined to limit general bandwidth usage to a specific network object or to a specific site), it is possible for these Virtual Circuits graphs to be blank, and not show any proper utilization of the traffic going into the virtual circuit even though traffic can be seen in the Real Time Monitor going into the virtual circuit.
CauseWhen the Virtual Circuits graph is generated, the main purpose of it is to show policies for the virtual circuit and how the bandwidth is being utilized in each of them. In virtual circuits that do not have policies defined, except for the automatic and invisible 'Auto Catch All', there are no official policies to be seen and the graph does not show any information as a result.
It is also possible that traffic is not falling where it is considered to be. If there are policies in the virtual circuit, but there is still no graphing data, it could very well be that the traffic falling into the virtual circuit is not behaving as expected.
ResolutionTo fix this issue, add a policy to the virtual circuit. An explicit 'Catch all' policy will work if you do not wish to change the behaviour of the VC as it exists. The policy can be defined as such:
- Guaranteed Bandwidth: 1%
- Burst Bandwidth: 100%
- Burst Priority: 5
- 'ALL' VLANs
- 'ALL' Sources
- 'Both' Directions
- 'ALL' Destinations
- 'ALL' ToS/DSCP Markings
- 'ALL' Applications
After some time for adjustment after the optimizer turned on, the data will be accurate and all traffic falling into the VC will be shown as a percentage of how much of the virtual circuit's bandwidth is being used.
Additional InformationPlease note that it is also possible to add more than a single Catch All policy - any number of policies to optimize and shape specific types of traffic can be added and the report will still generate information as expected.
