Active Hosts in DVCs accumulate until reboot

Summary

In some scenarios, it can be seen that the number of active hosts in a DVC will increment and will never return to zero, even if there is no one using the network at the time.

Overview

In v7.4 and earlier, when using a Dynamic Virtual Circuit (DVC), there are occasions where a bug shows that the current number of active hosts in the DVC (Montior > Control) continually increasing until the number gets so high it can cause the appliance to reboot. Even if the number of users decreases to the point where there are no users in the DVC, there will still show a steady amount of users; any more users joining after that point will accumulate. This pattern will repeat until the number of users is large enough to cause resource issues on the box and force a reboot.

Cause

In these versions of the firmware, it is caused by the way that the Exinda was handling the monitoring of the active users on the back end, and some situations where a quick exit of a user would not properly register as a user going inactive, leaving a 'phantom' user behind in records. Actually active users would join and add on to those phantom records and inflate the numbers, and similar exits would provide even more phantom records, keeping on until the box was rebooted.

Workaround

Manually rebooting the Exinda will take down the records to zero.

Resolution

As of v7.4.1, this bug has been fixed and there will be no phantom users remaining in DVCs, regardless of how the disconnection happens. To resolve this, upgrade to v7.4.1.
