Bayesian Filter Not Filtering Emails Effectively

Overview

Some spam emails are not blocked by the Bayesian Analysis filter and end up in the users’ inboxes or good emails are being blocked by the Bayesian Analysis filter as spam.

Environment

GFI MailEssentials.

Root Cause

The Bayesian Analysis database was incorrectly trained or it needs to be fed more information to start working more effectively.

Resolution

  • If the issue is occurring on a fresh installation of GFI MailEssentials, train the Bayesian Analysis filter using one or more of the methods described in the following article How to train the Bayesian Filter.
  • If GFI MailEssentials is blocking emails as desired, however, has allowed more emails through and/or produced more false positives recently, this may be caused by an incorrectly trained Bayesian filter. For example, a batch of spam emails was moved to the This is legitimate email folder or a batch of legitimate mail was moved to the This is SPAM folder.

In this case, consider starting over with a fresh Bayesian database. You can find more information about this in the article How to create a new database for the Bayesian Filter.
