Error: 'Access violation at address xxxxxxxx in module 'MSVCR90.dll'. Read of address 00000000' when opening the GFI LanGuard console

PROBLEM

After opening the console a error message box is displayed similar to the below:

  • GFI LanGuard
  • All supported environments

SOLUTION

  1. Stop the GFI LanGuard Attendant Service
  2. Close any GFI LanGuard application windows
  3. Open your task manager and end any update.exe processes running
  4. Depending on the GFI LanGuard version and Operating System, open the following folder:
    • GFI LanGuard 2012 or higher : ...\ProgramData\GFI\LanGuard 11
    • GFI Languard 12: ...\ProgramData\GFI\LanGuard12\
  5. Make a backup copy of the file lnss.dta
  6. Download lnss.dta from http://ftp.gfisoftware.com/support/LNSS/Scripts/lnss.zip and place it in the folder
  7. Check the "Properties" of the file and choose the "Unblock" button if present.
  8. Restart the GFI LanGuard service
Notes:
  1. After performing this solution you will need to re-set the passwords for any entries (such as alternate credentials) in the LanGuard interface
  2. The folders above are hidden by default. Please refer to the following articles to make them visible in Windows Explorer for:

CAUSE

The lnss.dta is used for password storage in the program and can become corrupt if the computer becomes low on disk space in the installation drive.
