Overview
This article provides the steps to follow to recover a password in Kerio Control Box NG Series using a USB flash drive in legacy devices. This procedure can be used by agents and users whenever the password to access the device is lost.
Important Information About USB Flash Drives
MBR Requirement
There are two types of USB flash drives on the market. Kerio Control NG 500 requires a flash drive formatted with a Master Boot Record (MBR). USB drives with floppy-type formatting cannot connect to Kerio Control NG 500.
Partitions and File Systems
Make sure that only one partition with the FAT16
or FAT32 (VFAT)
file system is created on the flash drive. The USB disk must not be formatted with the NTFS
, ext2
, ext3
, or ext4
file systems.
You can reuse the USB drive for other purposes after recovering the password. However, because the password reset file creates partitions on the USB flash drive, you need to do the following to reuse the drive:
- Remove all disk partitions.
- Create one or more new partitions.
- Reformat the disk with your file system.
Password Recovery Process
-
Insert the flash drive into a USB port on your computer.
-
Download and save the Kerio Control Password Reset File to the flash drive.
Note: The Password reset script should match the Kerio Control version. Older files can be downloaded via the Kerio Archive. -
Turn off the Kerio Control NG box.
-
Plug the USB flash drive into a USB port of your Kerio Control NG box.
-
Turn on the Kerio Control NG box.
-
When the Kerio Control Engine starts up, open the administration interface in a browser. The activation wizard opens.
-
In the activation wizard, create a new password for the admin account and then complete the process by following the remaining instructions.
Note: The password recovery is not repeated if a restart is performed with the flash drive still in the USB port. Once the operation is finished, the flash drive can be unplugged, and all data and settings will be preserved after the password recovery.
Confirmation
Open Kerio Control's administration interface and log in using the new password for the admin account that was created in Step 7 of the Password Recovery Process.
