Enabling Remote Registry Through Group Policy

Overview

Many GFI security products require remote registry to be enabled. The following procedure describes how to enable this throughout the domain using group policy on a Windows Server 2003 or newer domain controller. Other services that also should be set to Automatic that are necessary for connections to the remote registry include:

  • Remote Procedure Call
  • Server
  • Workstation.

Process

Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller

  1. Open the Group Policy editor.
  2. Navigate to, Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > System Services.
  3. In the right-hand pane locate Remote Registry.
  4. Define the policy, and set the Startup type to Automatic.
  5. Reboot the clients to apply the policy.

Windows Server 2008 or Newer Domain Controller

  1. Open the Group Policy editor.
  2. Navigate to, Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > System Services.
  3. Find the Remote Registry item and change the Service startup mode to Automatic.
  4. Reboot the clients to apply the policy.
