Error: No SMTP servers detected - when trying to install GFI MailEssentials

Answer

PROBLEM

When installing GFI MailEssentials 2015 on a gateway or perimeter server, the installer fails to detect the SMTP server and the installation fails,
although Microsoft's IIS SMTP has been installed properly and the related services are running.

ENVIRONMENT

  • GFI MailEssentials 2015
  • Windows Server 2012
  • Windows Server 2012 R2

How to verify

The following error can be found the installer log within the %temp% folder (this example is from a German installation):

Setting up [MailEssentials.Installer.Bootstrapper.MainInstall.ViewModels.EmailConfigurationViewModel]
AdministratorEmailAddressViewModel::Setup >>
Trying to enumerating SMTP servers ...

Committing [MailEssentials.Installer.Bootstrapper.MainInstall.ViewModels.EmailConfigurationViewModel]
Setting string variable 'ADMINISTRATOR_EMAIL' to value 'xxxxx@xxxx.de'
Loading next pane ...
Setting up [MailEssentials.Installer.Bootstrapper.MainInstall.ViewModels.WebServerSetupViewModel]
Found IIS v7 or more recent (IIS MajorVersion: 8)
Exception: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Dateiname: redirection.config
Fehler: Die Konfigurationsdatei kann aufgrund unzureichender Berechtigungen nicht gelesen werden.  (translation: The configuration file cannot be read due to insufficient permissions)
bei Microsoft.Web.Administration.Interop.AppHostWritableAdminManager.GetAdminSection(String bstrSectionName, String bstrSectionPath)
bei Microsoft.Web.Administration.Configuration.GetSectionInternal(ConfigurationSection section, String sectionPath, String locationPath)

SOLUTION

The installer has to be unblocked (right click on the installation file, click on Properties then Unblock, if available), and run the installer as Administrator, from the context menu.

CAUSE

Insufficient permissions over the Microsoft IIS configuration directory (typically %SystemRoot%\System32\inetsrv\config).
