Error: 'The file user.pst has reached its maximum size' When Exporting to a PST File

Overview

This article describes the issue and its resolution which occurs when the export to PST file fails due to reaching PST file size limits.

Prerequisites

  • Using GFI Archiver Import/Export tool or Mailbox Restore tool to export to PST

Diagnosis

If you have installed Microsoft Outlook 2007 on the GFI Archiver server to allow processing of PST files and you are trying to export a large mailbox from GFI Archiver into a PST file using the MailboxRestore tool, the export fails once the PST reaches Microsoft Outlook 2007's default PST size limit of 20GB and the debug log ..\GFI\Archiver\MailboxRestore\MBRestore.log reads:

Microsoft Outlook limits the maximum PST file size. The different Microsoft Outlook versions have different default limitations for PST file sizes.

Solution

Install a newer version of Microsoft Outlook which allows to handle larger PST files or follow the instructions to increase the max .PST file size in Microsoft Outlook for the currently installed version.

NOTE: Keep in mind that creating a PST file beyond the default limit will require changing this set of keys on any device you plan to use the PST on as well.

Testing

Depending on the size of the .pst file, installing the new version of Outlook should allow the export to complete. If the .pst is larger than Microsoft Outlook handles by default, after following the Microsoft article in the solution it should allow the export to go beyond the default PST limitations.
