LanGuard Click-to-Run Office Updates Not Detected

Overview

Click-to-run updates are different than normal Microsoft updates and seem to be missing some update items. However, this is as intended and is explained in the information provided below.

Information

GFI LanGuard uses Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) for its list of Microsoft updates/patches. WSUS is not the same as the Windows Update website that you can visit or the Windows Update service (including Automatic Updates) that are installed on Windows Operating Systems. Updates available through Windows Updates may be different than the updates offered through WSUS.

Generally, WSUS publishes the same updates/patches as Windows Update. However, WSUS is more conservative and is intended for domain IT departments to use. For some updates, WSUS may not publish right away and may instead wait some time while evaluating data from the field (Windows Update installations) to ensure certain updates are safe. This is usually done only for non-security updates. Security updates, on the other hand, are normally published right away.

The process of adding the new updates/patches is an automated process. You can check the following site to see which updates/patches have been added: Supported Microsoft Bulletins.

Further Information

In general, LanGuard detects missing updates for Microsoft products using the information published by Microsoft, which we are using as WSUS's database (wsusscn2.cab), and updates for Click-to-Run products like Office 365 are not published via WSUS.
