IP Tools Unable to Resolve DNS

Overview

This article provides the troubleshooting steps on how to check and change your DNS settings manually when Kerio Control's IP tools are not able to resolve FQDN servers.

Information

Kerio Control includes several tools to troubleshoot connectivity issues or to obtain information about a particular host or IP address. These tools are located under Status > IP Tools. For more information, please refer to Using IP Tools in Kerio Control.

Root Cause

If Kerio Control is unable to resolve DNS in one of the IP tools like Ping, it’s an indication that there’s an issue with the DNS configuration in the WAN interface.

Process

  1. Login to Kerio Control Webadmin and open Configuration > Interfaces.

  2. Right-click on the WAN interface and choose Edit on the context menu:

  3. Locate the DNS server field and make sure that it has the correct DNS server address provided by your ISP.

  4. (Optional) Modify DNS interface settings to include other reliable DNS addresses like Google’s public DNS address, 8.8.8.8:

Troubleshooting

To view advanced verbose output, you can enable the debug logs for DNS Messages under the following options:

  1. Decoded Protocols

  2. Kerio Control Services

Confirmation

Kerio Control IP tools should now be able to resolve external DNS servers.
