Overview

You receive the following error message when upgrading to GFI MailEssentials:

Error 1306 Another application has exclusive access to avapicfg.mdb

Also, Event id 1306 will be present in application event logs:

Error 1306. Another application has exclusive access to the file "avapicfg.mdb". Please shut down all other applications then click Retry.

Root Cause

The Microsoft Windows Management Instrumentation service is holding onto the avapicfg.mdb file, preventing the installation from continuing.

Resolution

1. Choose Start > Run.
2. Type services.msc and hit Enter.
3. Right-click Windows Management Instrumentation and click Stop.
4. Click Retry on the installation prompt and the installation will complete.
