Overview

Messages are not getting through to the recipient mail server and the message delivery log shows the following error in the Status Reply column:

550 / 552 5.3.4 Message size exceeds the fixed maximum message size

Root Cause

The recipient mail server has size limitations in place that the messages exceed.

Resolution

The Status Reply column will only show messages received from the recipient mail server when we tried to pass the mail over to it. Any errors found in this column are generated by the recipient mail server. This particular error is generated when a recipient mail server has size limits in place and the messages exceeded a limit. In order for the messages to be sent, either the size of the messages needs to be reduced or the limit increased.

• The way in which these limits can be configured and enforced will vary between different mail server environments.
