Licensing within GFI Archiver is split into the following two areas (each type is counted separately):
This article describes how these licenses work in GFI Archiver.

Archiving License
The Archiving License is the license for the regular archival of items, e.g., via a journal mailbox or the Archive Assistant (AA). The list below describes the features of the Archiving License:
- For the Archiving License, GFI Archiver counts all users whose items are being archived by GFI Archiver.
- For the Archiving License, GFI Archiver counts the Active Directory or GFI Directory users, who have the mail property configured in the user properties.
- Users who are disabled in Active Directory or GFI Directory do not consume a license.
- Users who are excluded from having their items being archived are not counted for licensing purposes.
- Email addresses that are excluded from having their items being archived are not reduced from the licensing count.

For example: If the customer uses any archive restriction method, e.g., for 5 users, then the licensed user count will be 5, but the reported count on the UI will be 4. |
File Archiving License
The File Archiving License is the license for the archival of files using the File Archive Assistant (FAA). The features for this type of licensing are described below:
- The FAA is installed per user. Therefore, each FAA user consumes 1 FAA license.
- If the same user installs the FAA multiple times, e.g., on their workstation and laptop, it binds a total of 1 FAA license only.
NOTE: A license key always has the same amount of licenses (for both, Archiving License and File Archiving License) encoded within the license key itself.

For example: Consider a company that has 100 mailboxes/users in total. Emails for 75 users are required to get archived via a journal mailbox, and files for 85 users are required to get archived using the FAA. In the scenario above, one would require a single license key to cover 85 users, and a restriction list must be configured for GFI Archiver such that it does not count a total of 100 users. |
Additional Notes
The following points are some other considerations while dealing with licensing issues for Archiver:
- Archiver licenses can be used on multiple servers for instances, such as migration.
- Upgrading a license does not deactivate the old key. The old server continues to run until:
- You can complete the upgrade.
- You move to the updated server.
- The license expires.
