Error: "Duplicate folders ??? ??? were detected in the mailbox. Therefore the user's connection was disconnected." When Trying to Download Items from the Journal Mailbox

Overview

This article provides the steps to fix an issue you may encounter when trying to download items from the Journal Mailbox.

Information

When downloading items from the Journal Mailbox, the process fails with an error message:

Duplicate folders ???? ??? ?????? , ?????? ?????? ????? , ?????? ????? ?????? were detected in the mailbox. Therefore the user's connection was disconnected.

The debug ..\Core\Debuglogs\ImapProvider.log reads:

"info   ","ImapProvider","Selecting mailbox 'Inbox'..."
"error  ","ImapProvider","ERROR: Exception while connecting:
;MArc.Exceptions.DSException: FolderNotFound ---> System.ApplicationException: Could not select mailbox 'Inbox'. ---> MArc.Imap.Client.ResponseHandlers.BadResponseException: Duplicate folders ???? ??? ?????? , ?????? ?????? ????? , ?????? ????? ?????? were detected in the mailbox. Therefore the user's connection was disconnected.

The debug ..\Core\Debuglogs\ImapClient.log reads:

"info   ","ImapClient","C: 3 SELECT 'Inbox'"
"info   ","ImapClient","S: 3 BAD Duplicate folders '???? ??? ??????', '?????? ?????? ?????', '?????? ????? ??????' were detected in the mailbox. Therefore the user's connection was disconnected."

This error occurs when the folder structure within the journal mailbox is corrupt, and duplicate folders exist. Therefore, when an IMAP client tries to select a folder, Microsoft Exchange closes the connection with the mentioned error.

Process

  1. Log into a computer with Microsoft Outlook installed.
  2. Configure Outlook to connect to the journal mailbox via the MAPI protocol (ensure that the Cached Exchange Mode option is disabled within the MAPI connection).
  3. Download the tool: MFCMAPI.
Note: MFCMAPI is a low-level MAPI client - please be careful when using this tool.
  4. Start the tool.
  5. Navigate to Session > Logon.
  6. Double click on the table entry, which represents the Journal Mailbox.
  7. Navigate to Root > Journal Mailbox and expand "Top of Information Store".
  8. Make sure that there are no duplicate folders present.

Confirmation

You are able to download items from the Journal Mailbox.
