Computer Duplicates Appearing in the Network Tree

Overview

Computers appear multiple times in the Network Tree and are probably binding multiple licenses. They are referred to only by an IP and do not have a hostname associated with it.

Environment

  • LanGuard 2011
  • All Supported Environments

Root Cause

LanGuard relies on Reverse DNS and/or NetBIOS name resolution to associate hostnames to a computer. If both name resolution technologies are not available it can cause the problem mentioned above.

Resolution

  1. In environments where NetBIOS is disabled, setup Reverse DNS zones, ensure that reverse name resolution (IP to hostname) is available and working.

  2. Remove any duplicates from the Network Tree.
