Agent Scanning a Target Machine Causes High CPU Usage

Overview

When scanning a remote machine using a profile that includes scanning of Microsoft Security patches, it increases CPU utilization.

Environment

GFI LanGuard

Root Cause

  • When using a profile that scans for missing Microsoft Security updates, the GFI LanGuard server or agent copies the wsusscn2.cab file to a numbered sub-folder of the directory C:\Windows\patches\ onto the remote computer used by the Microsoft Windows Update agent.
  • Scanning of this file by one or more 3rd party antivirus products can cause high CPU usage.

Resolution

Apply one or more of the suggested approaches from this Microsoft article:
Multiple symptoms occur if an antivirus scan occurs while the Wsusscan.cab file or the Wsusscn2.cab file is copied
