Vulnerability Scan Fails - OLE error C8000402

Overview

The following error occurred when running a vulnerability check:
OLE error C8000402
 

Environment

GFI LanGuard

Root Cause

This error indicates a problem with the Software Distribution folder which may have become corrupt.

Resolution

  1. Stop the Windows Update Service via Windows Services Console.
  2. Browse to C:\Windows and search for the Software Distribution folder.
  3. Rename the folder to SoftwareDistributionOLD.
  4. Restart the Windows Update Service to create a new Software Distribution folder.
    In some cases, a reboot may be required to accomplish this.
