Error: ‘Access Is Denied. Check This for More Details’ When Scanning a Linux Computer

Overview

The scan result displays the following error message after trying to authenticate against the SMB service when scanning a Linux computer:

Access is denied. Check this for more details: http://kb.gfi.com/articles/SkyNet_Article/Best-practices-accounts-permissions-and-alternative-credentials

Environmen

ENVIRONMENT

  • GFI LanGuard
  • All supported Linux distributions

SOLUTION

Add the root user in SMB users. You can use the following command to add the user to the Samba password database: "smbpasswd –a root"

GFI LanGuard Version 12.1 or later: Sudo or Root credentials for the Linux computer’s package manager application. Note that cloned root account is not supported.

CAUSE

LanGuard by default tries to connect to SMB because at that scanning stage, the engine does not know if the machine is a Linux or a Windows OS.
