Overview
This article guides you on how to perform an SNMP Walk to probe network nodes and retrieve SNMP information using the SNMP Walk Tool in GFI LanGuard.
Information
GFI LanGuard uses the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to obtain information, like hardware specifications and operating system version, from network devices, such as servers, computers, printers, hubs, switches, and routers.
Through SNMP, GFI LanGuard can monitor network performance, audit network usage and detect network faults.
Supported SNMP Versions
- SNMPv1
- SNMPv2c
Unsupported SNMP Versions
- SNMPv3
- SNMP over TLS / DTLS
SNMP Walk tool
This tool is used to probe your network nodes and retrieve SNMP information, for example, OID’s (Object Identifiers).
Process
- Launch GFI LanGuard.
- Click Utilities and select SNMP Walk in the left pane under Tools.
- In the IP address, specify the IP address of the computer that you wish to scan for SNMP information.
- To edit the default options choose from one of the steps below:
- Under Common Tasks in the left pane, click Edit SNMP Audit Options.
- Click the Options button on the top-right section of the screen.
- Click Retrieve to start the process.
IMPORTANT: SNMP activity is normally blocked by the router/firewall so that internet users cannot SNMP scan your network. Malicious users can use information collected through SNMP scanning to hack your network or systems. Unless this service is required, it is highly recommended to disable it.
