Overview
This article provides the steps to install GFI MailEssentials on a Windows Server 2008.
Environment
Windows Server 2008 or newer
Requirements
To install GFI MailEssentials on Microsoft Windows 2008 or newer, the following must be installed:
- Application Server role
- Web Server (IIS) role and its features
- SMTP Server feature (optional)
Information
Application & Web Server (IIS) Roles
Add the Application & Web Server (IIS) roles on Microsoft Windows 2008:
- Open Server Manager, expand Roles Summary and click Add Roles.
- Read the Before you begin information provided in the wizard and click Next.
- Select Application Server and Web Server (IIS) and click Next from the Select Server Roles window.
NOTE: A message prompting you to install various dependencies may display. Click Add required role services to continue the installation. - Read the Application Server information provided in the wizard and click Next.
- Select Web Server (IIS) Support, Windows Process Activation Service Support, and HTTP Activation from the Application Server - Role Services window.
NOTE: A message prompting you to install various dependencies may display. Click Add Features to continue the installation. - Read the Web Server (IIS) information provided in the wizard and click Next.
- Make sure the features list below is already be selected from the Web Server Role (IIS) - Role Services window.

- Health and Diagnostics

- Request Filtering
- Performance
- Static Content Compression

- Click Install from the Confirm Installations Selections window to finalize the Web Server IIS role installation.
Verify Web Server (IIS) Role Installation
Verify that the Web Server (IIS) role was successfully installed and in operation:
- Go to http://localhost from a web browser.
The IIS 8 splash window is displayed.
***IMPORTANT: The Add SMTP Server feature step should only be applied if GFI MailEssentials is NOT being installed on the same machine where ANY role of Microsoft Exchange 2007 or later installed. ***
Add SMTP Server Feature
- From the Server Manager expand the Features Summary node and click Add Features.
- Choose SMTP Server and click Next from the Select Features window.
NOTE: A message prompting you to install various SMTP Server dependencies may display. If this is the case, click Add required role services to continue the installation. - Finalize SMTP Server feature installation.
- Choose the role services to install and click Next from the Select Role Services window.
NOTE: It is highly recommended that the default Role Services are used for GFI MailEssentials. - Review the information displayed in the Confirm Installation Selections window and click Install to install SMTP Server and finalize the installation.
