Reprocessing Emails Wrongly Moved to the FailedMails Folder

Overview

Emails may be moved to the FailedMails folder wrongly. This issue is often reported when upgrading from MailEssentials 2012 to 2015.

If you find out that legitimate emails are being moved to the FailedMails folder, please contact GFI Customer Support.

This article provides general information on the GFI MailEssentials security and spam process. Moreover, it details how to reprocess the emails that are wrongly moved to the FailedMails folder.

Information

GFI MailEssentials scans emails for spam, viruses, trojans, and other malware. If a failure occurs when an email is processed by the anti-virus/trojan/content modules, the email is not delivered to the recipient as it may contain insecure content. If a failure occurs when an email is processed by the anti-spam modules, which are executed after successful checks by the anti-virus/trojan/content modules, the email is sent to the recipient as it has already been successfully verified for malicious content.

A copy of the failed emails is moved to the following directories:

  • When an email security module fails:

    \GFI\MailEssentials\EmailSecurity\FailedMails
  • When a module from spam filtering fails:

    \GFI\MailEssentials\Antispam\FailedMails
To identify which module failed, you can check the message in the GFI MailEssentials dashboard.

Process

Once the issue is resolved, reprocess the legitimate emails in the FailedMails folder by following the steps below:

  1. Change all the TXT files that are located in the failed mails folder to EML files by renaming them.
For example, the email1.txt file must be renamed to email1.eml.
    • To rename the files in bulk, please run the following command from the Command Prompt.

      Ren *.txt *.eml
Please make sure that you are in the correct failed mails folder.
  2. Move the renamed files to the following location, according to your system configuration, for reprocessing:

    Configuration

Emails in the Antispam\FailedMails folder are typically copies that have already been delivered. It is recommended to verify whether the email message has already been delivered before re-processing by using the message tracking option or by checking in Microsoft Outlook.
The PROP files in the FailedMails folder can be deleted.
