Outlook hangs and is being unresponsive for certain time periods with Archive Assistant installed (running in auto-import mode)

How to Identify
With the archive Archive Assistant being installed and "auto-archiving" in the background, Outlook becomes unresponsive from time to time. The unresponsive times vary in length, sometimes they are just a few seconds long, sometimes a few minutes. The users find this disruptive. It happens "randomly" throughout the day. There are no specific debug logs which indicate that this is occurring.
Workaround / Fix Details
- a patch for the AA which mitigates this issue to a certain degree is available (only via PSG) for the AA which is bundled with 2015 SR1 - ensure that the connection to Exchange is fast - if any PST files are attached to Outlook which are saved on a network share / UNC path > detach them from Outlook - try: http://www.gfi.com/support/products/gfi-archiver/Microsoft-Outlook-Not-Responding-when-the-GFI-MailArchiver-Archive-Assistant-is-archiving-emails
