Error: '550 5.7.1 Unable to relay' when sending faxes to GFI FaxMaker using an SMTP client

PROBLEM

The following error is encountered when trying to send a fax using GFI FaxMaker Client through SMTP protocol. The log files indicates the error below:

The server rejected one or more recipient addresses. The server response was: 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay

ENVIRONMENT

  • GFI FaxMaker
  • GFI FaxMaker Client (SMTP)

SOLUTION

To allow relaying on a Microsoft Exchange 2013 server machine:
  1. Open the Microsoft Exchange Admin Center
  2. Open Mail Flow
  3. Select Receive Connectors
  4. Select the GFIFaxmaker connector
  5. Select Scoping
  6. You will need to define the IP addresses or network range of the computers that will be using the GFI FAXmaker client/Fax Machines/Email Printers to send their faxes. Click the Add button under Receive mail from remote servers that have these IP addresses to add these IP addresses.
  7. Enter the IP address or address range of the computers running the GFI FAXmaker Client, Fax machines, email printers.
  • For example 192.168.1.0/24 or 192.168.1.1
  1. Click Save to save changes
  2. Close the Edit Window
To allow relaying on a Microsoft Exchange 2007/2010 machine:
  1. Open the Microsoft Exchange Management Console
  2. Expand the Server Configuration node and click Hub Transport
  3. Under the Receive Connectors tab in the right pane, right click the GFIFaxmaker connector
  4. Click the Network tab
  5. You will need to define the IP addresses or network range of the computers that will be using the GFI FAXmaker client/Fax Machines/Email Printers to send their faxes. Click the Add button under Receive mail from remote servers that have these IP addresses to add these IP addresses.
  6. Enter the IP address or address range of the computers running the GFI FAXmaker Client, Fax machines, email printers.
    • For example 192.168.1.0/24 or 192.168.1.1
  7. Click OK to save changes
  8. Click OK once again to save the changes to the connector

To allow relaying on a Microsoft Exchange 2003 machine:
  1. Open Exchange System Manager
  2. Expand Servers > Server name
  3. Expand Protocols > SMTP > Default SMTP Virtual server
  4. Right-click the SMTP Virtual Server for which you want to add relay restrictions and then click Properties
  5. Click the Access tab and then click Authentication
  6. On the Access tab, under Relay restrictions, click Relay
  7. In the Relay Restrictions box, click Add and then add the machines for which you need to allow relaying permissions
  8. To apply your configuration changes click OK twice

CAUSE

Relay Email Faxes from GFI FaxMaker client must be specifically allowed on the mail server, so that emails can be related from the local GFI FaxMaker client to the mail server in question. Otherwise, GFI FaxMaker client will prompt an error to indicate a mail relay failure.
