Error: 'Unrecognized database format 'C:\Program Files (x86)\GFI\MailEssentials\Antispam\config.mdb' in the installer log when GFI MailEssentials fails to install

PROBLEM

The installation of GFI MailEssentials fails with the error message:

Error in MainInstaller log:

Exception thrown by custom action:
System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> System.Data.OleDb.OleDbException: Unrecognized database format 'C:\Program Files (x86)\GFI\MailEssentials\Antispam\config.mdb'.
   at System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnectionInternal..ctor(OleDbConnectionString constr, OleDbConnection connection)
   at System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnectionFactory.CreateConnection(DbConnectionOptions options, Object poolGroupProviderInfo, DbConnectionPool pool, 
 
Note: Installer logs start with gfimes and contain the word "maininstall" in the file name (Example: gfimes_20130215135038_0_maininstall). These logs can be found in the %temp% directory.

ENVIRONMENT

  • GFI MailEssentials 
  • all supported environments

SOLUTION

  1. Find the database listed in the directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\GFI\MailEssentials\Antispam\config.mdb
  2. Open this database in Microsoft Access
  3. Run Compact and repair
  4. Re-run the installation

CAUSE

A corrupt database may not allow to complete the installation.
