Cumulative Update Patch Fails to Install with Error "This Access Control List Is Not in Canonical Form and Therefore Cannot Be Modified"

Overview

When trying to install the cumulative patch from General Settings\Product Updates, the update fails.

PatchPlugin.txt log located in ..\MailEssentials\Attendant\debuglogs will show the following error:

..."error ","PatchPlugin","Error: InstallPatch, System.InvalidOperationException: This access control list is not in canonical form and therefore cannot be modified.

Environment

  • GFI MailEssentials 2015
  • All supported environments

Root Cause

Permissions are set not correctly onto the GFI MailEssentials folder, causing an Access Control List message stating the permissions are incorrectly ordered to appear when accessing the folder properties.

Resolution

  1. Right-click the \GFI\MailEssentials directory and select Properties. Click the Security tab.
  2. Add the Network Service account with full control and allow the permissions to propagate.
