Enabling Public Folder Scanning

Overview

Public folder scanning enables GFI MailEssentials to retrieve emails from public folders to add to Whitelist/Blocklist and HAM/SPAM databases. On systems running Microsoft Exchange Server or Lotus Domino, public folders are created automatically on completion of the configuration process. This article provides steps to enable Public Folder Scanning for various versions of Microsoft Exchange Server.

Process

Follow the instructions listed below to enable the Public Folder Scanning:

  1. From the GFI MailEssentials Configuration console, expand Anti-spam, select Anti-Spam Settings. To the right select Public Folder Scanning Tab.

  2. Check the option Enable Public Folder Scanning.

  3. From the Poll public folders via list, select the Method GFI MailEssentials uses to retrieve emails from public folders. The following Methods are available for specific versions of Microsoft Exchange:

    1. MAPI - Applicability -  Exchange Server 2003:

      • GFI MailEssentials must be installed on the machine on which Microsoft Exchange Server is installed. No other settings are required.

    2. IMAP - Applicability - Exchange Server 2003:

      • The Microsoft Exchange IMAP service must be installed.  Parameters required include the Mail Server name, the Port Number (default is 143), the username and password, and whether SSL is to be used or not.

    3. WebDAV - Applicability - Exchange Server 2003; Exchange Server 2007:

      • Specify the Mail Server name, the Port Number (default is 80), username and password, and the domain. By default, public folders are accessible under the public virtual directory. If this has been changed, specify the correct virtual directory name to access the public folders by editing the text in the URL box.

    4. Web Services Applicability - Exchange Server 2007; Exchange Server 2010 or later:

      • Specify the Mail Server name, the local/internal domain, the port (default is 80 or 443 if using SSL), and the username and password. Please note that most default Exchange installations require the use of SSL with Web Services.  By default, Public Folders are accessible under the EWS/exchange.asmx virtual directory.
