Mac Scanning Error: 'Mac OS X Tool 'Softwareupdate' Failed and Returned 'Softwareupdate: Must Be Run as Root (102)'

Overview

When trying to scan a Mac OS based machine for missing patches, the following error message is displayed:

Mac OS X tool 'softwareupdate' failed and returned 'softwareupdate: Must be run as root (102)

Root Cause

The root user in Mac is disabled by default. This must be enabled to allow the GFI LanGuard to scan for updates.

Resolution

The GFI LanGuard requires the root user to be enabled in order to scan for software updates. Follow the process in the article below to enable it:
