Does GFI FaxMaker support Data Execution Prevention (DEP)?

Answer

Applies to:
  • GFI FaxMaker
Starting with Microsoft Windows 2003 Service Pack 1 and Windows XP Service Pack 2, a new feature was introduced which controls executables - Data Execution Prevention (DEP).

For the ‘Data Execution Prevention’ settings, it is recommended to enable ‘Turn on DEP for essentials windows programs and services only’ setting, rather then ‘Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:’.

If you need to enable DEP for all programs and services (‘Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:’) you will need to enter the GFI FaxMaker executables in the DEP exception list as follows:

Microsoft Windows Server 2003
  1. From the Start menu start the Control Panel and choose the System applet
  2. From the Advanced tab, click the Settings button under the Performance group
  3. Select the Data Execution Prevention tab
  4. If the ‘Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:’ radio button is selected, then you need to proceed with step 5 to step 7. Otherwise the following steps are not required
  5. Click the Add button and from the dialog go to the GFI FaxMaker installation folder, <..\GFI\FaxMaker>, and choose ‘fmgwinet.exe’.  Also add 'fmserver.exe' from the same directory
  6. Click the Apply and OK buttons to apply the changes
  7. Re-start the 'GFI FaxMaker Message Transfer Agent’ and the 'GFI FaxMaker Fax Server' services
Microsoft Windows Server 2008
  1. From the Start menu start  the Control Panel
  2. Click on 'System and Maintenance' and then select 'System
  3. Click on the 'Advanced System Settings' link
  4. From the Advanced tab, click the Settings button under the Performance group
  5. Select the Data Execution Prevention tab
  6. If the ‘Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:’ radio button is selected, then you need to proceed with step 5 to step 7. Otherwise the following steps are not required
  7. Click the Add button and from the dialog go to the GFI FaxMaker installation folder, <..\GFI\FaxMaker>, and choose ‘fmgwinet.exe’.  Also add 'fmserver.exe' from the same directory
  8. Click the Apply and OK buttons to apply the changes
  9. Re-start the 'GFI FaxMaker Message Transfer Agent’ and the 'GFI FaxMaker Fax Server' services
