The GFI Archiver version check fails ( ONLY)

PROBLEM

The Event Viewer within the Home tab of the web interface shows the error: 
 
GFI Archiver failed to check for updates. Please check your settings.

The wizard Configuration > General Settings > Version Check Settings fails and the following error is displayed: 

Could not connect with settings provided

ENVIRONMENT

  • GFI Archiver
  • All supported environments

SOLUTION

  1. Ensure that traffic on port 443 and the URL https://update.gfi.com/ is not blocked by a firewall and/or web filter (review rules and logs to verify this)
  2. Ensure that the correct settings for the local environment are specified under Configuration > General Settings > Version Check Settings (esp. when Internet access is only possible via a proxy server these settings need to be amended)
Note: As a test, try to open https://update.gfi.com/mar/ in a browser. A dialog will request username and password (contact technical support to request these).

CAUSE

GFI Archiver cannot successfully connect to the update servers over the Internet. This is most likely due to incorrect settings in regard of the environment and proxies or web filters blocking traffic.
