Error: '0x8004050a occurred while rendering message <message id> for download for user <user E-mail>' when downloading certain emails from the journal mailbox via IMAP4

PROBLEM

Certain emails fail to download from the journal mailbox and are not archived.

The Windows event log lists:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: IMAP4SVC  
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1023
Description:
Error 0x8004050a occurred while rendering message <message id> for download for user <user E-mail>.
 
The GFI Archiver debug log 'ImapProvider.log' reads:
ERROR: Process: failed to fetch message info[2], err[IMAP protocol error. 4 NO Unrecognized internal error: 0x8004050a.] 

ENVIRONMENT

  • GFI Archiver
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003
  • GFI Archiver is configured to use IMAP4 to download emails from the journal mailbox

SOLUTION

  • If running on Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP1, upgrade to Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2
  • If running on Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2,  move the journal mailbox to another storage group

Note that the article mentions that this issue was addressed in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2. However the issue was observed on systems running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2 as well.
