Installing GFI MailEssentials When Another VSAPI Based Solution Is Installed

Overview

This article provides an answer to the query: Can I install GFI MailEssentials if I have another VSAPI based solution installed?

Environment

  • GFI MailEssentials

Process

GFI MailEssentials can still be installed if there is another Virus Scan Application Programming Interface (VSAPI) based solution already installed on the server. However, the GFI MailEssentials Information Store Protection feature will not be enabled.

Enabling the GFI MailEssentials Information Store Protection

  1. Uninstall the other VSAPI based solution.*
  2. Enable the Information Store Protection feature from the GFI MailEssentials configuration.

Removing the reference to the older VSAPI based solution

*There are cases when even though a VSAPI based solution has been uninstalled, the solution is still detected by the GFI MailEssentials installation or configuration.

  1. Open Registry Editor. Choose Start > Run. Type regedit.
  2. Locate the registry key:[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\VirusScan]
  3. Right-click the Virus Scan entry and select Delete.
  4. Close Registry Editor.

More information

A VSAPI based anti-virus solution for Microsoft Exchange must register itself with the Microsoft Exchange Information Store by creating the following registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\VirusScan]

Microsoft Exchange only supports having one VSAPI based solution being registered. Therefore, if another VSAPI based solution is already installed, GFI MailEssentials cannot register itself for VSAPI based Information Store scanning.
